Benefits of Prenatal Massage

A woman can receive a Massage within their 1st trimester throughout pregnancy; however some therapists prefer women to come after 12 weeks into pregnancy while they are in their 2nd and 3rd Trimester as a precaution.

Prenatal Massage has many benefits for the expecting mother and the growing baby. Studies show that Prenatal Massage:

  • Regulates hormones

  • Reduces swelling or edema

  • Decreases nerve pain

  • Helps with back pain

  • Decreases joint pain

  • Improves blood and lymph circulation

  • Reduces muscle tension

  • Helps reduce headaches and migraines

  • Reduces stress and anxiety

  • Helps with being uncomfortable during sleep

  • Improves labor pains

Precautions

  • You may want to discuss Massage with your OB/GYN or another health provider (depending on your condition), or even a professional and qualified Massage Therapist before receiving a massage.

  • Lying on the Abdomen during Massage can cause too much pressure and feel uncomfortable. Some Massage tables have holes in the center for the stomach but that too can be uncomfortable. The best option is the side-lying position. The therapist would provide a pillow long enough for you to place under your head and stomach, and a smaller one between the knees for hip stability.

  • Deep Massage on or around the feet, ankles, and wrist can cause premature contractions due to sensitive pressure points.

  • If you have had premature contractions or even labor prior to the Massage, please inform your therapist

  • Consult with Massage Therapist before Massage if you have hypertension that is pregnancy induced

  • If you are a high risk pregnancy your Massage Therapist will ask that you consult with your doctor

  • Consult with your Doctor if you have or are at risk for Preeclampsia

  • Consult with doctor if you are experiencing severe swelling, high blood pressure, or sudden, severe headaches

  • Notify your therapist if you have recently gave birth

  • Ultimately, Massage can be a great addition to your prenatal care but be sure to consult with your health provider to make sure its the right fit for you. Another important note is to choose your Massage Therapist wisely! Choose a professional licensed therapist who has had lots of experience in Prenatal Massage or even one who is certified in Prenatal Massage. Overall, make sure your therapist listens and accommodates to your needs to receive the proper care.

A woman can receive Massage Treatments throughout the term of pregnancy.  Studies indicate that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pain, and improve labor outcomes and newborn health. During treatment, the client is lying on their side with pillows under the ankles, pelvis and belly, and under the head for comfort. There are many benefits of Massage for the expectant mother. However if you are high risk or have other health concerns, The Wellness Sanctuary recommends you to ask your OB/GYN if Massage is an option for you.
